Anatomy of an aging hipster

One day you’ll wake up and realize you’re a 35-year-old dude who makes racist jokes ironically. Your shtick — amusing enough today — will have curdled into something toxic. You spend your days much like you did a decade prior: careening about town, mocking everything in your path, getting hammered once the happy hour specials start. But now your age has started to show, and your quips have rendered you insufferable to anyone outside your insular cohort. Doesn’t sound great, does it?

The Comedy, which hit Video of Demand this week and heads to theaters in November, forces us to spend 90 minutes with That Guy. To be clear, the film has little to say that hasn’t already been said. If you’ve ever noticed that jaded people hide behind a veneer of savage irony (i.e. Juno), then The Comedy won’t offer much in the way of insight. Despite its trite moral center, however, the film remains hugely watchable thanks to Tim Heidecker, its star and asshole par excellence. (more…)
